Hello everyone! Today we’re going to compare the new budget iPhone SE 2020 – or just the SE 2 – with the popular budget Android-based Redmi Note 8 Pro.
It is very difficult to compare these models in appearance. How should we compare the telephone which seems to be just taken out of the dusty shop window of the telephone development museum, and the new modern model. If you aren’t acustomed to change, you’re in luck. Almost nothing has changed in the design of the iPhone SE 2 since 2014 when the iPhone 6 was still relevant. Are we really going to discuss the colors of the back panel like others do? Are we going to admire the unusual red color, the amazing combination of white back with a black front or note how accurately the black color is conveyed in the black model? I’ll just say that the back panel is available in white, black and red.
Everything else is usual to the Apple devices. There is a small screen with huge frames at the top and bottom. Some naive fans of iPhones were waiting for a compact frameless smartphone, but it takes time to develop it and make unnecessary efforts. We’ll just take the old iPhone 8 and put the new processor in there Apple engineers said. And they did it. But we’ll talk about the processors later.
The Touch ID fingerprint scanner is back under the screen. It works fast and clearly. But there is no face unlocking feature while its competitor and almost all modern smartphones have it. Of course there is the Lightning connector actively promoted by Apple on the bottom edge along with the microphone and speaker.
It’s not all that bad, there are some bright side, too. The iPhone SE 2’s stereo sound and moisture protection are according to the IP67 standard.
Compared to the iPhone, the Redmi Note 8 Pro looks just huge and heavy, it weighs 200 grams. But it is quite comfortable to hold in your hand due to its round edges of the case. The front and back sides of the phone are covered with Gorilla Glass 5.
Almost the entire front panel is occupied by a large screen with narrow frames and a small chin. The Note 8 Pro has a traditional drop-shaped front camera cutout.
There is the USB Type-C connector, a speaker, a talking microphone and a headphone jack on the bottom of the phone. There is a noise canceling microphone and infrared port above. The standard volume rocker and power button are on the right. The slot for SIM cards and SD-flash drives are on the left.
The Note 8 Pro has three cameras in a row in the center. The fingerprint scanner is placed close to them. Another camera and flash formed another small parallel row. The scanner also works quickly and without errors.
The Note 8 Pro is available in black, white and green. The latter version of the phone looks especially impressive. The color changes its shades from different angles.
The Redmi Note 8 Pro Here won here with the clear advantage. This phone looks modern and expensive and the iPhone SE 2 looks quite old and cheap. Maybe I don’t understand something and the design of SE 2020 seems wretched only to me? Write in the comments below what you think about the new iPhone.
The screen of the iPhone SE 2 is small by modern standards. It is only 4.7 inches. What screen size do you prefer? Share your opinion in the comments. The display resolution is not high – it is 1334 by 750 pixels. However, it is enough for this size of resolution. At the same time the phone has the IPS matrix of quite good quality. The screen is bright, contrasting and with good viewing angles. Although, the aspect ratio is outdated – it is 16 to 9.
The Redmi Note 8 Pro has a high resolution screen. The diagonal is 6.53 inches with a resolution of 2340 by 1080 pixels. It also uses the IPS technology. The quality of the screen is good. It is bright, with accurate color reproduction. There s a drop-shaped cutout under the front camera. The screen is protected with the Gorilla Glass 5 with an effective oleophobic coating.
The Redmi Note 8 Pro also wins this round for its large bright high-resolution screen.
We can compare iOS and Android forever but we can discuss it next time. I can only say that the iPhone SE 2 comes with the iOS 13. The Redmi Note 8 Pro comes with the Android 9, but there is already an update to the Android 10. On top of the Android, there is the MIUI 11 proprietary shell which extends the functionality of the operating system.
It would be interesting to know how many Apple users there are among our viewers. Write in the comments which model of iPhone you have now and what you think of the SE 2.
Whatever the Apple marketers say, the iPhone SE 2 has the same cameras as the iPhone 8. Yes, there are new processing algorithms, which is important. The work of the HDR has noticeably improved. But it seems to me that this is not enough to advertise cameras as new when they are several years old. Write your opinion on this in the comments below.
The iPhone SE 2 has a rear camera which consists of 12 megapixel module with optical stabilization. The photos are not bad – the dynamic range is wide, the color reproduction is good. The portrait mode doesn’t always blur the background correctly. Maybe the depth sensor that everyone considers useless is not enough. Most likely these are software flaws. But the main disadvantage of the camera is the absence of night mode. Therefore, at night the quality of the camera drops down comparing to its competitor and all modern smartphones in general. The absence of this regime can only be explained by Apple’s usual greed. After all, this is a purely program mode.
In terms of photos, Apple is rather far from the camera phone leaders, but in terms of video quality Apple is still quiet good. The camera can shoot in 4K at 60 frames and it does it perfectly. The stabilization, dynamic range and focus are all at a good level. What good is good. There is no way to take it away.
The old 7-megapixel front camera tries its best. Selfies get pretty good, but the details are often lacking.
Unlike the industry leader that is trying to pass off old cameras as new, the Redmi Note 8 Pro has become an innovator. This is the first smartphone in a series in the world with a 64 megapixel camera. It has four modules:
- The first module is the main one. As already mentioned, it is the 64 megapixel module with the Samsung Isocell Bright GM2 sensor;
- The second one is the ultra-wide angle of 120 degrees by 8 megapixels;
- The third is the 2 megapixel macro camera;
- And the depth sensor is also 2 megapixels.
The main module shoots well. In the afternoon, the photos are comparable to those obtained with the iPhone. It is inferior in dynamic range, but it wins in detail. At night, the pictures are much better than the ones made by the iPhone SE 2. The wide-angle camera might be not the best, but at least it is there. I don’t consider the 2-megapixel macro camera useful much, but the audience wrote to me that they are actively using such a module. Write in the comments below whether you use the macro camera and what you use it for.
The Note 8 Pro shoots video in 4K resolution with good detail, but mediocre stabilization. When shooting in 1080p mode, the stabilization works much better.
The 20-megapixel front camera provides vivid, detailed selfies. The background blur feature works well.
Both smartphones have good cameras. It seems to me that we have a draw here. The iPhone SE 2 shoots video better bit the Redmi Note 8 Pro has more advanced photo capabilities.
It suddenly turned out that Apple can surprise us. The iPhone SE 2 received the latest and very powerful A13 Bionic processor, manufactured using 7 nanometer technology. But it looks like an atomic reactor on a moped on the old model. Why would you need such power when you can’t really play dynamic games on such a small screen. Nevertheless, this powerful processor is an absolute plus. The phone will definitely not become obsolete for several years. Unless of course you take into account the fact that it has already become obsolete. But this is my biased opinion.
There are only 3 gigabytes of RAM but knowing how Apple can save memory, this should be enough. The built-in memory can be 64, 128 or 256 gigabytes. Of course, you cannot increase memory.
The Redmi Note 8 Pro has the Mediatek Helio G90T processor in conjunction with the Mali G76. The processor is positioned as a gaming one. In Antutu, it shows a good result under 300 thousand points. The results of the synthetic tests only partially reflect its real performance. But the gaming experience is good too. The processor is not very hot. This is facilitated by a liquid-cooled copper tube radiator. There are no friezes even in dynamic scenes in most heavy games at high settings.
The built-in memory of the Note 8 Pro can be 64 or 128 gigabytes, the operational memory can be 6 or 8 gigabytes. The additional memory can be installed instead of the second SIM card.
The IPhone SE 2 wins this round. It has a more modern and powerful processor.
The communication capabilities of these two models are close. They don’t support 5G. There is the fifth Bluetooth and contactless payments. The iPhone SE 2 can transfer data faster via Wi-Fi of the sixth generation. Although, you need to look for the appropriate router for this. The Redmi Note 8 Pro has an infrared port.
The Iphone SE 2 has 1821 mAh battery which seems a bit outdated. It is not enough even for a day of active use. The manufacturer claims that the iPhone SE 2 will have the same autonomy as the iPhone 8. The table shows the operating time for the iPhone 8. The first tests show that the battery of the new iPhone really holds literally several percent better than the iPhone 8. And this is not enough.
The Redmi Note 8 Pro has a usual 4,500mAh battery. Depending on the usage scenario, the battery lasts for one to two days.
Both smartphones support fast charging technology. But Apple cannot put a normal charger in the kit for a super-cheap device for $ 500. It is necessary to save on something. Therefore, there lies the cheapest Chinese charger at 5 watts for a couple of bucks. Of course the normal charger needs to be purchased separately for a lot of money. Well, Xiaomi was able to splurge and put the fast charging device at 18 watts. But, unlike its competitor, the iPhone SE 2 supports wireless charging.
In terms of autonomy, the Redmi Note 8 Pro wins with a big advantage.
As always, we’ve turned to the resources of the Internet and read reviews on the iPhone SE 2 and the Redmi Note 8 Pro. Let’s start with the negatives.
The iPhone SE 2
- It has a small and low resolution screen.
- Its battery is weak.
- It is expensive
The Redmi Note 8 Pro
- It is big and heavy.
- The fingerprint scanner is located awkwardly.
- There is no stereo sound.
The iPhone SE 2
- It is designed very well (I’m not joking, there are a lot of such reviews).
- Its size is small.
- Its performance is high.
- It has a nice camera.
The Redmi Note 8 Pro
- It has a modern design.
- Its processor is powerful.
- The camera takes great photos and videos.
- Its autonomy is good.
So, let’s sum it up. The iPhone SE 2 won only one round – it has a more powerful processor. In addition, its advantages include moisture protection, stereo sound, wireless charging and excellent video shooting quality. The Redmi Note 8 Pro has a more modern design, better screen, higher autonomy and richer photo capabilities. The Note 8 Pro won, but not with a clear advantage.
