Hello everyone! Today I have prepared for you another comparison review of two devices released in 2019. This is Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 8 Pro and A9 model from the new 2-smartphone line A 2020 from the Oppo brand.
Both devices received a typical design, and they can be distinguished only with careful consideration for several details, aside from the addition of the logo on the rear panel. The first is the placement of the fingerprint scanner and its shape. For both gadgets, the scanner is located on the rear panel. But the Redmi Note 8 Pro is round and combined with the lens unit of the main camera, while the Oppo A9 is oval and located immediately below the camera module.
The second distinctive detail is the presence of the Oppo A9 narrow “chin”, while the Redmi Note 8 Pro has complete framelessness. The third difference is the location of the only moving housing elements – physical buttons for controlling volume and power. For Redmi Note 8 Pro, they are located on the right side, and for Oppo A9, they are placed on the opposite sides (the power button is on the right side, and the volume control is on the left).
The next difference is the back panel material. While Redmi Note 8 Pro has 3D glass, Oppo A9 has plastic. Thanks to the body material, the Xiaomi device has a noticeably more solid appearance than the Oppo gadget. The classic “sandwich” of two glass panels and an aluminum side frame can be taken for a real flagship.
In general, devices are visually similar. The edges and corners of smartphones are rounded. At the bottom end, in addition to the double-sided USB Type-C connector, microphone and speaker, there is a standard 3.5 mm mini-jack for connecting headphones. Almost the entire front side of the devices are occupied by a display, on the upper edge of which a tear drop-shaped cut-out under the front camera is located in the center. The vertical module of the main camera is located in the upper part of the rear panel, right in the middle. 3 out of 4 lenses are combined in one frame. The fourth is placed separately on the side of the block next to the single flash.
Both smartphones are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. The fifth-generation glass with an oleophobic coating is installed on both sides of the Xiaomi device. Oppo A9 model has a third-generation glass and only on the front side.
As for the dimensional parameters of Redmi Note 8 Pro: It’s 161.35 millimeters long, 76.4 millimeters wide, and 8.79 millimeters thick. The gadget weighs 199.8 grams. In terms of dimensions, the device from the Oppo brand is slightly different. Its length is 163.6 millimeters, its width is 75.6 millimeters, and its thickness is 9.1 millimeters. The weight of the smartphone is 195 grams. This combination of parameters visually gives the Oppo A9 a slightly more elongated shape than the Redmi Note 8 Pro.
Oppo A9 2020 is available in two colors: Cosmic purple and marine green. Redmi Note 8 Pro has a wider range of colors – the device is available in three colors for the back panel. These are pearl white, spruce green and mineral gray. For both devices, the back panel has a gradient color, creating a holographic effect of light refraction. Thanks to this, when moving smartphones, their back shimmers beautifully in different shades.
The gadget from Xiaomi received a 6.53-inch IPS display with a Full HD Plus resolution of 2340 by 1080 pixels. The aspect ratio is 19.5 to 9. The pixel density is 395 ppi. The brightness leaves a lot to be desired – to see something on the screen in the sun is very problematic.
The Oppo A9 2020 is equipped with a slightly smaller IPS display. Its diagonal is 6.5 inches, and the aspect ratio is 20 to 9. The difference isn’t very noticable. But in its resolution, which is 1600 by 720 pixels, Oppo is inferior. The pixel density is only 270 ppi. This allows the device from Oppo to spend much less battery power on the display than the Xiaomi gadget. In addition, thanks to the dynamic adjustment of contrast, the A9 2020 screen does not fade even in bright sunshine.
Both devices are based on the Android 9.0 Pie operating system, dressed in different shells. Oppo A9 2020 has Color OS version 6.0.1 with an updated minimalistic interface and smart navigation. The Xiaomi gadget has a proprietary MIUI 10. Of the features of this system, it is worth noting Mi Turbo support with optimized application launch speed, as well as Game Turbo 2.0 support with custom game settings.
Redmi Note 8 Pro received 4 cameras with artificial intelligence. The main module is 64 megapixels with ultra-high resolution Ultra HD 9248 by 6936 pixels and aperture f / 1.89, and has a viewing angle of 79 degrees. By default, the main camera takes pictures in Bayer filter mode, that is, it automatically combines 4 neighboring pixels into one. The result is pictures with a resolution of 16 megapixels. When you switch the module to a 64-megapixel shooting mode, the camera produces pictures with excellent detail.
Under the main module is an ultra-wide 8-megapixel lens with an f / 2.2 aperture and a viewing angle of 120 degrees. Above the main lens is a 2-megapixel depth sensor. Separately from the unit, a 2 megapixel macro lens is placed. It allows you to shoot small objects from a distance of 2 centimeters.
Among the primary features of the main camera of Redmi Note 8 Pro, its worth highlighting the presence of night and portrait shooting modes, 10x digital zoom, the ability to place a custom watermark on the pictures, and the option to correct shooting distortions. As a minus, it should be noted the lack of optical stabilization. In general, the quality of shooting with the main camera is good, but you should not expect something extraordinary from this camera phone. As for video shooting, the most interesting aspects are the functions of shooting in 4K format and slow motion with a quality of 720 pixels and a frequency of 960 frames per second.
The front camera of the smartphone with 20 megapixels with f / 2.0 aperture is also equipped with artificial intelligence. This provides a quality selfie.
The Oppo A9 2020 smartphone also received 4 cameras, but with a slightly different set of modules. The main 48-megapixel camera with f / 1.8 aperture is complemented by an ultra-wide-angle module for panoramic shots and a pair of 2-megapixel lenses for portrait shooting (this is a depth sensor and a monochrome module).
Like the Redmi Note 8 Pro, the Oppo A9 main camera shoots by default in Bayer filter mode, i.e. with a resolution of 12 megapixels. Of course, you can switch the camera mode to full 48 megapixels in settings. The quality of pictures with the main camera is good. Saturated colors, high detail. The ultra-wide 8-megapixel module with f / 2.25 aperture has a viewing angle of 119 degrees and support for autofocus.
Of the features of the Oppo A9 camera, its worth noting the presence of expert, portrait and night modes, the possibility of slow motion video recording and intelligent image correction. Optical stabilization is again absent, but there is electronic stabilization.
The front camera model has a resolution of 16 megapixels and aperture f / 2.0. Of the interesting functions, it is worth highlighting the auto-alignment of skin tone.
The Redmi Note 8 Pro smartphone is equipped with the latest 12-nanometer Mediatek Helio G90T processor for 8 cores. Xiaomi smartphone became the first owner of this professional gaming chipset with liquid cooling system in the world. Graphics meets the Mali G76 MC4 video accelerator. In terms of RAM, the device is made in only one version – 6 gigabytes. As for the permanent memory of the gadget, Xiaomi provides users with a choice of two versions – 64 or 128 gigabytes. The manufacturer allows for the possibility of expanding the internal memory by installing microSD up to 256 gigabytes in a hybrid slot instead of a second SIM card.
The Oppo A9 2020 is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 11nm chipset with Game Boost 2.0 mode, which saves battery power and minimizes response time in games. The graphics processor Adreno 610 acts as a video accelerator. In terms of RAM, the Oppo A9 model exists in two versions – 4 and 8 gigabytes. The amount of internal memory in both versions is 128 gigabytes. The permanent memory of the device can be expanded. The gadget has a triple slot for two SIM cards and one microSD of up to 256 gigabytes.
Both gadgets support all the necessary modern communication standards, including Wi-Fi protocol version 802.11. Both gadgets use fifth-generation Bluetooth. There is also a multifunctional NFC module with support for Google Pay.
Redmi Note 8 Pro is equipped with a built-in lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 4500 mAh. The gadget supports fast charging power of 18 watts.
The Oppo smartphone has a more capacious battery. The capacity of its non-removable lithium polymer battery is 5000 mAh. The gadget has a reverse charge function that allows you to charge other devices from your smartphone. The model itself supports fast charging power of 10 watts.

The device Redmi Note 8 Pro can safely be awarded the title of “superior” in this bout. Its advantages include a main 64-megapixel camera with 4 lenses, a huge frameless display with Full Hd Plus resolution, as well as a powerful next-generation video game-oriented processor. Such a set of characteristics is far from every flagship for $800, or even $1000, not to mention budget smartphones.
