Radeon RX 5700 XT vs Geforce RTX 2080. Test in games!

Hello everyone. Today we’re going to compare the RX 5700 XT and RTX 2080. These video cards are both high-end and advanced.

The video card vendor is gonna be the overclocked version of GAMING OC from GIGABYTE company.

Appearance and Design

The video cards practically don’t differ in appearance. There is a slight difference in the design of the case and its color palette. The RTX 2080 has a gray color close to black, and the RX 5700 XT has a lighter gray color. The backplate has also been stylistically changed for both cards and, in my opinion, the one performed by the 2080 looks attractive. The GIGABYTE inscription on the backplate has an interesting color. And the last difference between the video cards is the inscription on the side of the video card. There is an inscription “GEFORCE RTX” next to the inscription GIGABYTE, which has a white backlight on the RTX 2080, – this is the name for NVidia video cards. As for the performance of the RX 5700 XT, they left only the identical inscription of GIGABYTE, which has a bright blue backlight. The area where GIGABYTE is placed with backlighting is also different in color. The gray color of the RTX 2080 is close to black, and the RX 5700 XT has a gray color. In general, the video cards look quite creative.

GIGABYTE follows its best traditions. There are 5 copper heat pipes in the RTX 2080 cooling system, 4 of which are attached to the video chip. Such a system is more than enough for the 2080. The RX 5700 XT has 6 heat pipes, which are connected to the video chip. 6 pipes are enough for this card to ensure acceptable temperatures. Also, the heatsink that dissipates heat plays an important role in cooling both video cards. Well, it’s worth completing the WINDFORSE 3X cooling system. The fan in the center rotates in the opposite direction than the others. This will provide more efficient air circulation, which will ultimately benefit the temperature of the video card.

The video outputs are almost identical, except for the “USB Type C” of the RTX 2080. The remaining number and type of connectors for the RX 5700 XT and RX 5700 are equal: there is one HDMI and 3 DisplayPort.

Performance

The characteristics of the video cards’ performance are similar, but there are still some differences. The RX 5700 XT’s frequency of the GPU is much higher, as well as its number of stream processors. Also, the transition of the RX 5700 XT to the advanced PCI-E v 4.0 is a non-standard solution. For those who did not know, the motherboards that support PCI-E v4.0 have the X570 and TRX40 chipset. This should increase the performance of the video card in games and other tasks. As for all other parameters, the cards are identical, so let’s move on.

Tests in Games

Now it’s time to test the video cards in games with ultra graphics settings. We took the top processor from INTEL CORE – i9 9900 to see the video cards work for 100 percent. Our task is to measure the maximum possible FPS, and not to advertise the i9 9900K. There are cheaper processors that are similar to this processor, but we are just curios what the FPS will be here.

We can see an excellent result in Resident Evil 2 (2019). The video cards did a great job at the game. The RTX 2080 was 10% more productive. The difference of an average frame was 12 FPS. The RX 5700 XT also performed excellently in the game and the FPS did not drop below 84 frames.

There were no problems with F1 of 2019. The RTX 2080 is ahead of the RX 5700 XT. The average FPS of 2k resolution for RTX 2080 was 100, while the RX 5700 XT’s indicator was 89. The minimum number of frames for RX 5700 XT did not drop below 73.

The video cards coped with Call of Duty Modern Warfare without any difficulties. Both video cards issued more than a hundred frames on average. The minimum number of frames of the RX 5700 XT was 88. Now let’s move on to a rather demanding game.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is by far one of the most demanding games. Not all video cards can cope with it at ultra settings, especially in 2k resolution. This hame is ideal for testing these video cards. The FPS score of the RTX 2080 look better. The minimum number of frames did not drop below 46. The RX 5700 XT showed a minimum of 44 frames. The average FPS is the same: the FPS of the RX 5700 XT is 55, and GTX 2080 has 58 of them. The difference in percentage ratio was 5% with a screen resolution of 2k.

The gap is also not large in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The performance gap was 8% in 2k resolution. The RTX 2080 produced stable FPS in 2k resolution, which did not fall below 67, while the average was 84. The RX 5700 XT has lower FPS performance by 5-6 frames. But the gap is not so big between the cards.

Now it’s time to summarize everything. The RTX 2080 was slightly more productive than the RX 5700 XT. The RTX 2080 has no overwhelming advantage though. Also, don’t forget to ray tracing in te video cards of the RTX series. Having this function, you can play with more realistic graphics, but you have to lower the quality of the textures, because by enabling ray tracing, the FPS goes down. The RX 5700 XT is much better at high graphics settings with 60+ FPS in 2k resolution in modern games.

Let’s talk about the results of the tests. The RTX 2080 did its best in all games using a 2k screen resolution. The RX 5700 XT showed a descent result, too. The temperature of the RX 5700 XT by GIGABYTE GAMING OC varies depending on the game and its workload. The temperatures of the RTX 2080 were recorded from 59 to 65 degrees and the constant temperature of this video card was around 63-64 degrees. It’s not bad. At the same time, the constant temperature of the RX 5700 XT was around 67-69 degrees. The video card from AMD was a little hotter, only by 3-5 degrees, which is not so far. As a result, the RX 5700 XT doesn’t reach the performance of the RTX 2080, it is a bit hotter, but the market price for this video card is lower than for the RTX 2080. The RTX 2080 is at least 28% more expensive than the RX 5700 XT.
